Latest Doctor Who episode features Airman Battle Uniforms

Here's something I found a bit amusing in the latest episode of Doctor Who, "A Good Man Goes to War" (S06E07), features a future militarized church soldiers or "Clerics" wearing the United States Air Force's official uniform--- ABUs or Airman Battle Uniforms.

I really can't tell the if these are the official uniforms or some sort of modified version since I haven't seen ABUs up close that much. The uniform of the Clerics sport the green-ish digital tiger stripe camo that makes it identifiable as USAF ABUs. Main differences with the official USAF uniforms is with their name tapes, instead of "United States Air Force", there is some sort of identifying name code and on the other side where the name should be is the word "CLERIC".

They even sport a modified USAF symbol, which they also use as a rank insignia as shown in the picture above. This is the second time that Clerics appeared in Doctor Who, the first time in the episode "Flesh and Stone" (S05E05), where they appear to wear a different kind of uniform which is pictured below.

Doctor Who is a popular long-running science fiction television show from the United Kingdom which has gained an immense international following since its revival in 2005. Doctor Who began in 1963 and since then has a long history of using a lot of cheesy and improvised special effects just like in the video below where they use bubble wrap and green paint to make a green alien monster:
In the latest seasons, the show keeps up with tradition in using clothing from modern day or even in the past and try to pass them off as someone in the future would wear, not unlike how the original Star Trek series would reuse costumes from other shows and movies and make them appear alien.

  1. Originally the clerics were wearing the British Desert DPM (Disruptive Pattern Material) with the British Kevlar helmet, essenially they were wearing British Military Uniforms. As someone who is in US Air Force ROTC, it bugs me that the enemies of The Doctor are wearing ABUS (and yes they are actually wearing regulation ABU jacket, pants, belt and cover (hat) with out of regulation boots and undershirt)

  2. They're ABU all right. Prior service Security Forces here... Using the camo pattern is one thing, but butchering the AF wings kind of irritates me..

  3. Anyone know where one can find the "butchered AF logo" patches? I would like to turn a set of ABUs into this uniform...
